Is the Ram engine with eTorque worth it?

Engine technology has come a long way since the Dodge brothers started building cars more than a century ago. Over the year, automotive power plants have become vastly more powerful, reliable and efficient. Near the end of 2019, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with eTorque was named to Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems list for the second year in a row. “The Pentastar V-6 with eTorque is a great example of giving consumers electrified powertrain technology that seamlessly works with their daily lives,” Micky Bly, Head of Global Propulsion Systems, said in a press release. “The standard eTorque system delivers better fuel economy without compromising power or capability.”

What is the eTorque system?

Owners of the Ram 1500 who choose a powertrain with the eTorque system won’t have a traditional alternator. It has been replaced with a belt-driven motor generator that performs several different functions. The most important purpose of the eTorque system is to help the engine achieve its incredible fuel economy scores.

A 2020 Ram 1500 with the 3.6-liter, Pentastar V-6 with eTorque can record up to 20 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway when the truck has rear-wheel-drive. Versions of the full-size truck with four-wheel-drive will be able to post 19 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sahara can also be equipped with this engine.

The eTorque-equipped engine is rated to produce 305 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. It also has an engine start/stop capability that will save fuel by shutting the engine down when the vehicle is at a stop and automatically restarting it within 400 milliseconds of the gas pedal being pressed by the driver.
